Think Outside the Box

For our upcoming Valentine’s party, make a customized Valentine box.  Please do not bring your box to school until our Valentine’s Day party on February 13th.

In class we talked about being inspired by things around us, and what we see.  As a class, we voted on themes to incorporate with the design of our Valentine’s box this year.  Think about something unique or original that would fit underneath one of the categories.  Remember that every student makes a Valentine box, so what is going to make yours stand out and be unique from the rest in that category?  Be creative, think critically, take your time, and don’t be afraid to do something nobody else would think of.   The class will vote on the top choice for each category.  Go above and beyond and think outside the box!  Themes are.......
Sports - Nature - LOVE Valentine - Candy - Most Unique

NOW and THEN Project

Using the 4-C’s

This past month we have discussed in our Social Studies how the past has influenced the present.  We compared and contrasted how people lived, learned, worked, and played.

COLLABORATION-Interviews
To further enhance your learning, you will apply what you have learned and conduct an interview with a senior of your choosing (from the generation of your grandparents or great grandparents).  You will ask your interviewee a set of questions that have been provided for you.  Each student will also answer the same questions from his or her point of view.  INTERVIEWS MUST BE DONE BY Monday, September 30th.  Make a copy of the interview for yourself to assist you with the project at home.

CREATIVITY & CRITICAL THINKING-Project
You will gather the information from your interview, as well as your personal answers from the questions.  You will compare and contrast the answers from the different generations.  The information must be displayed in some form for a special viewing.  Some ideas could be: posterboard, trifold board, power point, movie, Now and Then scrapbook, etc.  Attached is the rubric that will be used to grade your display. The projects are due Wednesday, October 7th!

COMMUNICATION-Written Portion of the Project
The written portion of the project will be done here at school.  All interviews question-answer responses (including your own) will be used to create the written portion here at school. You may need to make a copy of the interview yourself to assist with the project at home.

All 3rd Grade students will display their projects for the parents and senior to view on the afternoon of Thursday, October 10th.  A special invitation will be sent out to the senior inviting them to this special showing.

I am looking forward to hearing about your experiences and what you learned from the perspective of another generation.

ENJOY and HAVE FUN! ---------3RD GRADE TEAM

Football Geography

Yes, the best season of sports is here! I love football and I know my class family will love it by the end of the season.  Last week we held our football draft.   Each child drew a number and picked his or her team depending on the number they draw.  The children will be battling each other all season long.  They will be given a weekly homework assignment that is due on Wednesday of each week.  They will complete a page in their Football Geography notebooks.  Each page will focus on the opposing team.

What is a cultural characteristic? This is a a fun fact about that city.  This could be about the history, a person, fun fact, what the city is known for, festivals celebrated there, and the list goes on.  Be creative and learn something new kids!

What is absolute location? This can be found on my Third Grade Links to Learn page.  Or click here. The children should be able to find this on my webpage easily.

What is relative location?  If you were standing in Denver, Colorado where is your city located in relationship to Denver.  Please use the cardinal and intermediate directions of N, S E, W,  NW, SW, NE, SE.

What region is your city located? See your color coded map in the back of your booklet.

Most of the information can be found in the back of the booklet: maps, cities, states, teams, etc.

The first assignment in their notebook is due Wednesday, September 11th.  I highly suggest printing out your team's schedule and place it somewhere special.  Feel free to decorate your booklet and add your schedule to it as well.

Now have fun, sit back and enjoy the game!
